A key part of Kidmia’s mission is to foster pride in the Ethiopian culture, as well as the America culture. Our U.S.-born children rarely hear about Ethiopia in the American media, and when they do, the stories are often somewhat distorted or negative. We believe that it is vital to teach the whole story about the wonderful Ethiopian culture and heritage that is their birthright. Through Kidmia, our children learn about Ethiopia’s status as the “cradle of mankind.” They are exposed to Ethiopian culture, religion and spirituality. They explore the country’s diverse geography, from the rugged mountains to the rolling savannah to the stunning waterfalls, lakes and rivers. They learn about the native animals and the work that is being done to preserve them. They also experience Ethiopian music, clothing, folk tales, dances and annual festivals in their Ethiopian culture studies.
All of these activities help ground our children in our native Ethiopian culture
as they also learn about American traditions and history. To learn more about
